The smooth, void-free face lays flat and gives a clean, uniform surface so a finish floor goes down without telegraphing imperfections, and the thin 1/4" panel bends slightly to follow a surface and cuts easily with a knife or saw. It staples and glues down fast as a floor underlayment. The full 4' x 8' sheet covers a large area. It is a go-to thin panel for underlayment, backing, and light paneling.
